Sudan:
Southern Sudan is a land recovering from a troubled history and 20 years of civil war. In 2005 a Comprehensive Peace Agreement was signed, which grants semi-autonomy to the South for an interim period until 2011, at which time the South will vote on whether to secede and become an independent nation. After 20 years of war, much of Southern Sudan, including roads, schools, hospitals, and churches were destroyed or fell into disrepair. The signing of the CPA has brought a new climate of hope. In partnership with the international community, the Sudanese people are eager to rebuild their shattered nation.
Areas of Focus:
Church Empowerment: In partnership with the Episcopal Church of the Sudan, our team plans to work in areas such as evangelism, youth ministry, and discipleship. We are particularly interested in equipping the church for trauma counseling and ministries of peace and reconciliation. We will also have opportunity to provide basic biblical theological training to pastors who have had very limited access to education during the war.
Education: We hope to impact the next generation by training school teachers. We also have opportunity to partner with the local community in providing classrooms, desks, books, and other basic educational needs.
Health: We are committed to following the example of Jesus and caring for people’s physical bodies as we address their spiritual and social needs. We can do this by supporting existing church-based and government-run health facilities, by training medical staff, and by doing basic community health education and evangelism. We can also make great improvements in health through the provision of safe water sources.
