South Sudan Water Projects Fund
Among the most critical infrastructure needs in South Sudan is access to safe drinking water. Due to a long dry season, a deep water table, and a lack of surface water in most areas, the most dependable supply of water comes through deep boreholes. As of November 2009, there are 94 boreholes in Mundri West County serving a population of 33,975 – and it is not uncommon for fully one-third of the pumps to be broken at any given point. The South Sudan Water Projects Fund enables the WHM team to serve the people of Mundri by: (1) repairing existing boreholes and hand pumps, and (2) developing a sustainable water management system through community involvement.
